Born out of a unique vision, UPES is India's First Energy University and Asia's First & only Energy & Core Sector University. UGC and NAAC recognised, UPES offers over 35 graduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs to more than 3900 students in the high growth sectors of Oil & Gas, Power, Aviation, Shipping, Automobile, Infrastructure and Logistics & Supply Chain.
A statutory university, UPES was established in 2003 through an act of the State Legislature of Uttarakhand with a picturesque, 25-acre campus in Pondha valley, Dehradun.
UPES is an endeavour of Hydrocarbons Education & Research Society (HERS), a non profit organisation dedicated to promoting education and training in Energy & allied sectors. Since its inception, UPES has become the "Institute of Choice" for students and corporates in the Energy and Core sectors.
UPES currently has one of the highest memberships of ASME students in the region (northern India). The Section, started on November, 2009 has been recognized as a prime student body in engendering engineering ethics and technical thinking among the student community of the university.

Mr. G C Tewari - Pro-Vice Chancellor, UPES
Mr. G C Tewari is a Chemical Engineer from HBTI, Kanpur. he earned his M.E. degree from IISc Bangalore in 1966. He holds an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University. Mr. Tewari has over 39 years of industry experience starting with Synthetics & Chemicals, Bareilly for 4 years, followed by 25 years with Engineers India Limited. Here, he worked in various departments, from the Process Engineering division to Heat & Mass Transfer division, Energy & Environment division and finally to the Marketing division for 10 years, till 1995 leaving as the Executive Director.
He has worked with Fluor Daniel India Limited for 3 years; helped setup their Marketting and Process divisions and later joined Lurgi India Limited at the end of 1998 to serve as a member of the board responsible for the marketing of technology products. Mr. G C Tewari then took up the responsibility of heading the Engineering Department fro Reliance at the Jamnagar refinery in October 2001. He retired at the end of December, 2004.
Called on to help guide young engineers at the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES), Mr. Tewari took up the post of Dean, College of management Studies in January, 2005 and taught Petroleum Refining, Petrochemicals and Strategic Management etc.
Currently, (since 2007) he is the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University and oversees all activities of the campus with over 5000 students and 280 members of faculty and staff.
